Here is a practical winter outreach idea that allows you to bless your community while sharing the Gospel: providing warm blankets to those in need.
The Need for Warmth
In the UK, rising fuel bills and food prices are putting increasing financial pressure on households. Many people are struggling with debt, whether due to poor financial management or unforeseen circumstances. Regardless of the cause, this presents a unique opportunity for the church to step in and help.
A recent Facebook post caught my attention:
"Anyone want 2 warm blankets - free?"
It saddened me to see people in need of such a basic necessity. The blankets were claimed almost immediately, making me wonder how many others around us would eagerly accept such an offer.
This is a Gospel opportunity.
Turning Blankets into a winter outreach idea
After reflecting on that post, I realised how easy it could be for Christians to offer blankets through community Facebook pages or other local platforms. Search for your town, village, or community group online and post a simple offer to give blankets to anyone in need. This act of kindness opens the door to meaningful conversations about faith.
When you give a blanket, consider including a free Bible, one of our free Gospel flyers, or an invitation to a church event or service. This way, you address both physical and spiritual needs.
What the Bible Says About Good Works
The Bible encourages us to combine good works with the sharing of the Gospel:
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." — Matthew 5:16
In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus reminds us to be “salty” people who let their good works shine, bringing glory to God.
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." — Ephesians 2:10
"They which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men." — Titus 3:8
See also Hebrews 13:16 and John 15:8 for further encouragement.
How to Source Blankets
You might already have blankets at home to give away (please wash them first!). You could also
purchase new ones or involve your church. Consider:
Asking your church to allocate funds for buying blankets.
Encouraging members to donate blankets.
Organising a collective outreach effort as a congregation.

Ways to Spread the Word
If you don’t use Facebook, there are other ways to reach your community with this offer:
Ask your local Post Office or corner shop to display an advert in their window.
Print and distribute flyers through your neighborhood. Click here to download a flyer you could print and put through letterboxes (write your contact details in the box)
Post a notice on a community bulletin board.
This simple idea could make a big difference in someone’s life, both physically and spiritually. Let’s seize the opportunity to reach people this winter.
