The one way to know God personally

Many people ask the important question "Can I Know God Personally?"

The question of whether one can know God personally has been asked throughout history. According to the Holy Bible, the answer is a resounding "yes." The Scriptures reveal that God desires a personal relationship with each of us, and this relationship is made possible through Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, who stepped into history to bridge the gap between humanity and the divine. Here, we explore what the Bible has to say on the matter.

1. God’s Desire for a personal relationship with Humanity

From the very beginning, the Bible demonstrates God’s intention to have a personal relationship with humanity. In Genesis, we read of God walking in the garden with Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:8), showing intimate fellowship. Though sin disrupted this relationship, God’s desire to restore it never wavered.

  • Jeremiah 31:3: "The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee."

This verse underscores God’s everlasting love and His active pursuit of a relationship with His people.

2. Jesus: God in the Flesh

The most extraordinary expression of God’s desire to know us personally is found in the incarnation of Jesus Christ. In Jesus, God stepped into history, becoming fully human while remaining fully divine.

  • John 1:14: "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."

Jesus’ incarnation reveals God’s willingness to meet us where we are. By becoming human, He experienced the struggles, joys, and pains of life, enabling Him to relate to us personally.

  • Hebrews 4:15: "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin."

Jesus’ earthly life demonstrated that God understands us intimately and empathises with our experiences.

3. Restoring the Relationship Through the Cross

The ultimate purpose of Jesus’ coming was to restore the broken relationship between God and humanity. Through His death and resurrection, He made a way for us to know God personally and forgiveness of our sins (breaking of His Holy laws).

  • Romans 5:8: "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

  • John 14:6: "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

These verses emphasise that through Jesus’ sacrifice, we are reconciled to God and can approach Him directly.

4. Experiencing a Personal Relationship with God

To know God personally, the Bible calls us to humbly respond in faith. This involves acknowledging our need for Him (and His forgiveness for our hell deserving sins), believing upon Jesus Christ as our Saviour, and committing our lives to Him.

  • John 1:12: "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."

When we seek Jesus, we become children of God by the power of God - He makes all His followers a new creature (being born again), entering into a personal and eternal relationship with Him. "if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." 2 Corinthians 5:17. He also turns the person from a lifestyle of sin and rebellion - giving them a completely new relationship with sin (hating and forsaking) and the choices they make in life are now to seek to please God and live completely for Him.

5. Living in Fellowship with God

A right standing, personal relationship with God is a lifelong journey. Through prayer, studying His Word, and obeying His commands, we grow closer to Him.

  • James 4:8: "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you."

  • Psalm 16:11: "Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."

These verses assure us that God’s presence brings joy and guidance as we walk with Him daily.

In Summary

The Bible affirms that we can indeed know God personally. Through Jesus Christ. God stepped into history, bridging the gap between the divine and the human. His love and sacrifice invite us into a right relationship with Him, offering forgiveness, guidance, and eternal life. If you seek to know God, the invitation is open: believe upon Jesus, draw near to Him, and experience the transformative power of a personal relationship with your Creator.
