Why did we produce it?
"Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." Matthew 7:21
It is a sad reality that many who will say to the God on that last day "Lord, Lord" and He will turn them away.
"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?" Matthew 7:22
Astonishingly, many people who claim to be Christians will prophesy. They will cast out devils and also do many wonderful works. However they will not be found as ones who have been granted eternal life.
How can we help those who are alive today, who profess to be Christians, but are not?
The Bible has the answer.
"Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?" 2 Corinthians 13:5
Given that there are precepts laid down in scripture, so that one might be able to examine oneself. Wouldn't it be good to have this brought together in an easy to read printed flyer?
That is why we decided to reproduce this printed tract written by JC Ryle (with kind permission of the Chapel Library (see details on the back of the printed leaflet).
The tract, is like a mirror. Taking the precepts laid down by the Apostle John. It encourages and shows a professing Christian how to examine themselves, prove themselves as to if they are truly in the faith. Using scripture throughout.
It struck me recently regarding Judas Iscariot. That although we know clearly he betrayed the Lord Jesus, the rest of Jesus' disciples did not know who it was that would betray Him! Therefore they clearly had no idea he was an unbeliever amongst them. Yet they spent much time together.
In Matthew 13, the Bible tells us a parable of the tares of the field.
It tells us that there will be tares (false believers) amongst the wheat (true believers). So with a sober mind, we should not always assume all that we fellowship with are believers.
With that, I would encourage you to give people one of these tracts. Because although we should believe a person's profession of faith, it is God who truly knows the heart.
Where could you use this tract?
Given that this tract is written specifically for a Christian, I would say that its primary audience would be that. However, we are contacted by many people who wish for thousands of these to be printed - so they can distribute to anyone on the streets. This did surprise me. However, the first page really can speak to everyone. Because it makes it very clear that there is standard for entry into the kingdom - that without that standard, a person will not enter.
This in and of itself could be a sufficient hook for attention.
So if you were going to simply hand this out to anyone on the streets or through letterboxes, then there are many other places you could place this.
Otherwise, if you are going to use this to reach professing Christians, it would be advised to do so carefully. It would be quite the poke in the eye (even if it is a valid concern) to hand someone the tract, making it clear that you don't believe they are saved.
Pray.. and pray some more for the best opportunity.
I suspect that giving this to a person you know, in the right loving way, would be the most beneficial and successful use of the tract. However, given the urgency of the Gospel and the fact that tomorrow is not guaranteed, you might want to consider prayerfully distributing the tract to members / attendees at local churches. Better still, writing or passing during conversation with the local vicar or church elder. This would have a greater effect on many, given the large number they reach / teach the things of the Bible to.
But every individual needs salvation. I am a believer that if there is scripture involved, God can use it.
When we give away scripture posters to anyone that professes to be a Christian, when Someone orders a parcel of tracts or a free Bible - I would include this tract.
Do you mail out church / ministry newsletters or bulletins? Do you have a space at the back of your church where you could place a pile of these (with permission)?
Many churches in your area will have a letterbox. Many churches in the area where you might go on holiday too.
I remember once trying to engage with a person on the streets when they professed to be a Christian. I often ask the question "Are you born again?" - the answer can be quite telling. This person I recall reacted in a very strange way when I asked him this question. Backing away like I had the plague. But most people whom I ask the question - regardless of their answer - I offer them the tract. Encouraging them to read it, as it very helpful for any Christian. At the same time I mention that they can ask for free printed Gospel tracts through the information on the tract. The majority of people are very receptive of that offer and happily take the tract.
Remember to pray for them. If they are not saved - perhaps they will be convicted to call upon the Lord. If they are saved, the tract is a great balm to the soul. I love to read it now and again, because it is God's Word and it strengthens me.
May I ask you, dear reader, Are you born again? Read the JC Ryle tract to examine yourself.
Take it one step further
"consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works" Hebrews 10:24
Don't forget to encourage other Christians to use these too! - Show them how easy they are to use, or share with them a story of how you have used them. Tell them they can request them free through the detail on each tract. Point them to this article to show them how useful the tract is and where they could place them.
Speak with your pastor too to see if he might encourage folks in the work.
Remember to pray about them before and after, that you might be led where the Lord would have you go. That He might prepare hearts to read them and work in them and their household.
