How can I overcome fear or hesitation when sharing the Gospel?

Fear in spreading the good news

Sharing the Gospel is one of the greatest callings of a believer, yet it can also be one of the most intimidating tasks. Fear and hesitation often arise from concerns about rejection, inadequacy, or not knowing what to say. However, the Bible offers guidance and encouragement to help us overcome these challenges. By relying on God’s Word and His promises, we can share the Gospel boldly and effectively.

1. Recognise the Power of the Gospel

The first step in overcoming fear is understanding the power of the message we are sharing. The Gospel is not about our ability to persuade but about God’s power to transform lives (The power is in the seed, not in the sower!).

  • Romans 1:16: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek."

When we remember that the Gospel itself carries the power of salvation, we can trust that God will work through our efforts (even when we are weak).

2. Trust in God’s Presence

Fear often stems from a sense of inadequacy or isolation. However, the Bible reminds us that we are never alone when sharing the Gospel.

  • Matthew 28:19-20: "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."

Jesus’ promise to be with us always assures us that we do not share the Gospel in our own strength but with His divine presence.

3. Pray for Boldness

Prayer is a powerful tool in overcoming fear. The early Christians often prayed for boldness in proclaiming the Gospel, and God answered their prayers.

  • Acts 4:29-31: "And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word. ... And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness."

When we feel hesitant, we can ask God to fill us with His Spirit and grant us courage to speak His truth.

4. Focus on God’s Strength, Not Your Weakness

It is easy to feel unqualified to share the Gospel (we are never going to be good enough), but the Bible teaches that God uses our weaknesses to display His strength.

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9: "And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."

By relying on God’s strength, we can overcome feelings of inadequacy and trust Him to work through us.

5. Remember the Eternal Importance of the Gospel

The Gospel is a message of eternal significance. Remembering the stakes can help us push past fear and hesitation.

  • 2 Timothy 1:7-8: "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord."

God equips us with His Spirit, enabling us to overcome fear and share the Gospel with love and confidence.

6. Prepare and Study the Word

Hesitation can arise from feeling unprepared. Diligent study of God’s Word equips us to answer questions and share the Gospel effectively.

  • 2 Timothy 2:15: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

By immersing ourselves in Scripture, we can confidently share the hope within us.

7. Trust God for the Results

Finally, it is important to remember that the results of sharing the Gospel are in God’s hands. Our responsibility is to be faithful in proclaiming the message; God will handle the outcome.

  • 1 Corinthians 3:7: "So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase."

This perspective frees us from the fear of failure and allows us to share the Gospel with joy and trust.

In Summary

Overcoming fear or hesitation when sharing the Gospel requires a shift in focus—from ourselves to God. By recognising the power of the Gospel, trusting in God’s presence, praying for boldness, and relying on His strength, we can step out in faith. Remember, the message of the Gospel is life-changing, and God has chosen us as His messengers. With His help, we can share it boldly, knowing that He is with us every step of the way.
